Meet Charmane & Alistair – The New Faces Behind the Courthouse
Charmane and Alistair Jarvis, the new owners of The Courthouse Hotel, are no strangers to the region. With backgrounds in hospitality and accounting, and years of experience running venues like Freight Bar & Rooftop in Ballarat, they’re bringing new life to this historic pub.
For Alistair, reopening The Courthouse is personal. His family has deep roots in Smythesdale—his grandfather lived on Brooke Street, where generations of Jarvises were raised.
Meet the Team – Meg & James
Meg, a local hairdresser turned Assistant Manager, is back doing what she loves—welcoming locals and creating memorable experiences.
James, originally from Hamilton, is now Venue Manager. A music lover and footy fan, he’s passionate about making The Courthouse a place where locals feel right at home.
The Return of Chef Dean Higgins
After 13 years in the kitchen, Chef Dean Higgins has returned with a renewed focus on honest, hearty meals. From parmas and pies to his legendary woodfire pizzas, Dean is serving up food that feels like home.

Entertainment Returns to Smythesdale
Friday night live music is back, trivia’s coming soon, and our upstairs function space is open for bookings. A new bar with 4 taps (plus Guinness!) is also on the way.
